The study examines how the Ottoman Empire, Turks, and Türkiye are represented in Arabic, history, and geography textbooks used from primary to secondary education in Algeria. The findings show that Algerian textbooks present a predominantly positive image of the Ottoman legacy, portraying the Ottomans as an advanced civilisation in science, architecture, culture, and art, as well as a protector of the Islamic world. Ottoman–Algerian relations are framed in terms of voluntary union, cooperation, and mutual support rather than conquest.
The article argues that this narrative represents a selective re-signification of the Ottoman past shaped by Algeria’s colonial experience and post-independence memory politics.
