Program Educational Objectives

The educational objective of the Sociology Undergraduate Program conducted under the Department of Sociology is to train sociologists who possess both theoretical and practical knowledge about the fundamental approaches, theories, and various subfields of the discipline of sociology. Accordingly, among the educational objectives is to cultivate sociologists who have the competence to understand social structures and processes, as well as the ability to design and conduct scientific research in different subfields of sociology, and to report and interpret the data and results obtained from such research.

In addition, the aim of the Department of Sociology is to provide the necessary scientific and academic environment to train practitioner and/or academic sociologists who possess knowledge and skills related to measurement and evaluation tools used in various applied areas of sociology, who have critical thinking and socio-cultural literacy skills, who are aware of their responsibilities toward themselves, their environment, and the society in which they live, who adhere to professional and scientific ethical principles, and who follow current developments in the field of sociology.

The educational objectives of the Department of Sociology are as follows:

PEO-1. To provide in-depth knowledge in the core areas of sociology such as institutions, family, economy, politics, education, health, religion, law, and applied sociology, and to equip students with analytical thinking skills in these areas.

PEO-2. To comprehend the historical development of sociology and the fundamental ontological, epistemological, methodological, and theoretical dimensions of sociological analysis; to acquire knowledge about research and data analysis methods; and to develop the ability to analyze human social life within this framework.

PEO-3. To enable the evaluation of the impacts and outcomes of social policies by cooperating with colleagues from other disciplines for the purpose of analyzing the functioning of social relations, processes, and structures.

PEO-4. To equip students with the skills to design basic or applied research projects to address current social issues, to analyze the data obtained from such projects using appropriate methods, and thereby to develop new policy proposals.

PEO-5. To develop the competence to establish interdisciplinary approaches by relating sociology to other social science disciplines (such as history, literature, art history, law, philosophy, etc.).

PEO-6. To educate individuals who possess advanced theoretical knowledge in the field of sociology, have developed critical thinking skills, and are able to follow written and oral sources in a foreign language within professional contexts and communicate at a basic level.
