Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University Mountaineering and Outdoor Sports Club has successfully completed the traditional climb to the summit of Ilgaz Mountain, the 101st anniversary of our Republic, which was held for the 5th time this year.
On 28 October Monday evening, the team set off from Etlik East Campus at 23.30 with the bus of our university with 38 participants and under the leadership of Club Advisor Sociology Department Head Prof. Dr. Ramazan Yelken and Club President Cüneyt Arda Keskin. At 02.30 on Tuesday night, the team took a break for 1.5 hours at Ilgaz Akbak facilities and after the tea, soup treats and preparations offered to our group by the facility, the group moved again and reached the Mülayim village plateau on the slopes of Ilgaz Mountain.
Here, after the group leaders gave the last information about the climb, reminded the rules and completed the deficiencies, the climb started at 04.00 in a great discipline, excitement and enthusiasm accompanied by the night hill lamps. The goal was to meet the sunrise at the summit and to experience the enthusiasm of the Republic in this atmosphere and to unfurl the flag of our university.
When the group reached the summit at the end of a long and successful climb with temperatures between 0 and 3 degrees Celsius on the snowy ground in places, a student from the group had to stop due to an injury to the left knee cruciate ligaments. He was immediately given the necessary first aid, a knee brace was put on, a bandage was wrapped, a pain relieving gel was applied and at 08.30 the trek was resumed at a slow pace. The necessary authorities were informed about the situation. As the trek slowed down, the summit was reached late but successfully around 09.00. Since it was not possible to stay at the summit for a long time due to the strong and cold wind, the Republic celebration ceremony was started immediately, the flags were unfurled, and after a moment of silence for our martyrs and the reading of the national anthem, the descent started at 09.38. A support group was formed for our injured friend and the descent was carried out with a heavy pace and long breaks without dividing the group in accordance with his walking pace. Finally, after a long descent of 5.5 hours, we reached our bus to Mülayim Plateau at 15.00 and successfully completed the climb.
After the preparations, we moved around 16.00 and reached the Etlik East campus of our University at 19.21 after the break and the activity ended. Happy 101st anniversary of our Republic.
