11 February marks the UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science and promotes the importance of women getting into STEM fields and the value of education for young women and girls. In order to mark the day by highlighting the UK’s support to excellent research conducted by women researchers through Newton- Katip Celebi Fund, Dr. Fatma D. Güzel was invited to the Women and Girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Lunch hosted by His Majesty’s Ambassador (HMA) Jill Morris on 7th of February at British Embassy in Ankara. The event was aimed to produce some social media content to inspire young women and girls to get into STEM fields with the help of their contribution to the research area. Dr. D. Güzel, in collaboration with Dr. Damion Corrigan of Strathclyde University, received research funding from the Newton-Katip Çelebi Fund/Institutional Links programme in 2018, and set up a microfabrication facility at AYBU. The project was aimed at developing on-chip biosensors to tackle antibiotic resistance.
