Mechanical Engineering Graduate Programs (Thesis)
Our school accepts students into Mechanical Engineering Graduate Programs (Master’s and PhD). Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest and most comprehensive engineering fields, covering the design, analysis, and manufacturing of mechanical systems while applying principles of mathematics, physics, and material science. At AYBU Mechanical Engineering Department: The research activities are conducted in areas such as Mechanical Behavior of Materials, Manufacturing - Machining, Mechanical Vibrations and Vibro-Acoustics, Robotics and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Mechanics and Finite Element Methods, Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer, Renewable Energy Technologies and Hydrogen Energy, enhancing theoretical knowledge, gaining practical skills through experimental methods, effectively using analysis and computation software, and interpreting theoretical, experimental, and numerical results.
In the Mechanical Engineering Master’s and PhD programs, individuals aiming to specialize in these areas are expected to enhance their theoretical knowledge, gain practical skills through experiments, use analysis and computation software effectively, and develop the ability to interpret theoretical, experimental, and numerical results.
Applicants to the program can be graduates of Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Energy Systems Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Automotive Engineering, and Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering departments.
Language of Instruction
Both programs are taught entirely in English. All students wishing to pursue graduate education in our department must demonstrate English language proficiency.
Duration of Study
The Master's program duration is 2 years. The first year is allocated for coursework, and the second year for thesis work. If necessary, an additional year may be granted. Students must complete the Master's program within 3 years.
The PhD program duration is 4 years. The first year is for coursework, and the remaining three years are for thesis work. If necessary, 2 extra years may be granted. Students must complete the PhD program within 6 years.
Application Requirements
Official application requirements are announced on the Graduate School website before the application period. The information below is for reference only. Required Bachelor GPA: 2.5 Required Master GPA: 3 Required ALES Score for Master’s: 70 Required ALES Score for PhD: 75 Applicants for programs with English as the language of instruction who do not have exemption exams from the preparatory class must take the English Proficiency Exam administered by our university.
Statement of Purpose
Applicants should follow the announcement published at aybu.edu.tr/fbe. Admissions generally occur once a year for the Fall term, and rarely twice a year for both Fall and Spring terms. The Fall 2024-2025 announcement can be seen here. Foreign applicants must submit their CV, transcript, diploma, English proficiency certificate, and statement of purpose to fenbilimleri@ybu.edu.tr.
Course Registration
Students in both programs (Master and PhD) must take 7 courses and FBE900 Research Methods and Ethics. PhD students who have already completed this course during their Master’s program should submit a petition to the Department Head for exemption.
Advanced Engineering Mathematics or an equivalent course is mandatory. PhD students who completed this course in their Master’s program and it has been less than five years since completion are exempt. Exempt PhD students must still take 7 courses. A course taken during the Master’s program or equivalent cannot be repeated in the PhD program.
Students must also take the Seminar course in their final term. Master’s students must submit the Master Thesis Proposal to the Graduate School by the date specified in the academic calendar. Both programs’ students must take Special Studies each term, and, once thesis work begins, must take MASTER’s THESIS or PhD DISSERTATION until graduation.
Students must plan their courses with their advisors and register via obs.aybu.edu.tr within the deadlines indicated in the academic calendar.
