Edited by Prof. Dr. Ruşen Keleş, Prof. Dr. F. Nihan Özdemir Sönmez, and Research Assistant Parla Güneş, the book Mekân Okumaları (Readings of Space), published by İdealkent Publications, includes a chapter titled “The Case of Ankara Etlik City Hospital in the Context of the Relationship between Accessibility and Density,” authored by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yahya Aydın from the Department of Sociology at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Köse from the Department of Geography at Afyon Kocatepe University.

The study examines the relationship between accessibility and density in urban space, focusing on the implications of large-scale health infrastructures for urban transportation and spatial planning. Using the example of Etlik City Hospital, which was opened in 2022 in the Yenimahalle district of Ankara, the research evaluates the locational accessibility of the hospital and the traffic density generated around this large health complex. By employing Geographic Information Systems (GIS)-based spatial analysis techniques, the study demonstrates that the hospital campus is located close to one of Ankara’s major transportation networks and has significant effects on traffic density in the surrounding area.

The chapter also emphasizes that the location of healthcare facilities in densely populated urban areas is critical not only for access to healthcare services but also for urban transportation and planning policies. In this respect, the study highlights the importance of considering transportation infrastructure and urban density dynamics in the planning of large-scale health campuses such as city hospitals, in order to ensure the sustainable provision of healthcare services in urban environments.
