The aim of the AYBÜ History Department’s 30% English undergraduate program is to build the future by drawing on the past with an objective, document-based approach, critically analyzing existing sources. The department also seeks to train historians who are proficient in the fundamental approaches of historical science, possess both theoretical and practical knowledge, are capable of designing and conducting scientific research, and demonstrate critical thinking skills. Furthermore, students are expected to be aware of their responsibilities to themselves, their surroundings, and the society in which they live, and to adhere to professional and scientific ethical principles. By providing a rigorous scientific and academic environment, the department aims to cultivate a new generation of researchers.
Among the program’s other objectives are teaching students core historical knowledge from Ancient Times to the Republican Era, equipping them with a source language and a Western language to examine historical documents and access archives. The History Department also aims to train individuals who will work as faculty members, researchers, instructors of Ottoman and Revolution History, archival specialists, and history teachers, who are proficient in historical methodology, fluent in at least one source language and one Western language, approach history objectively and without prejudice, conduct comparative historical research, and think scientifically and critically.
