Please Read the Following Guidelines Carefully Before Course Registration!

Rules for Course Registration of Undergraduate Students in the Department of Sociology

According to the AYBU Academic Calendar, students must complete their course registration between September 15–17, 2025. During the add-drop period (September 27–30, 2025), students may make necessary adjustments to their schedules.

Students in the 1st and 2nd years are subject to the new curriculum, while 3rd and 4th-year students follow the previous curriculum. Some elective courses in the old curriculum may appear as compulsory in the new one, and vice versa. Therefore, 3rd- and 4th-year students must carefully check their curriculum status and register for courses accordingly.

To graduate, students must complete a total of 240 ECTS credits. Normally, undergraduate studies span eight semesters, with a balanced workload of approximately 30 ECTS credits per semester. After selecting compulsory courses from the 2nd year onward, students are advised to take typically one or two departmental electives and one non-departmental elective each term. Students with sufficient GPA may register for upper-level courses in consultation with their advisors.

Pedagogical Formation Courses

According to the new decision on pedagogical formation education, students who have never previously taken formation courses will no longer be offered formation education within AYBU. You may access the announcement of the AYBU Pedagogical Formation Education Coordination Office by clicking here.

Based on this decision:

  • 2nd-year students cannot select courses with the RFOR code.

  • 3rd- and 4th-year students who have never taken any RFOR-coded course cannot register for them either.

  • RFOR-coded courses are opened only for 3rd- and 4th-year students who have already taken at least one formation course and wish to complete their formation training.

Students continuing pedagogical formation must have at least 16 ECTS of FEL-coded, 16 ECTS of PSY-coded, and 8 ECTS of Logic courses on their transcripts.

Note: RFOR-coded formation courses are independent of the Sociology Department curriculum and are not included in the 240 ECTS credits required for graduation.

Course Selection Guidelines by Year

1st-Year Students

All first-year courses (the first two semesters) are compulsory. Students must register for the following courses listed in the system:
SOS 101, SOS 103, SOS 105, FEL 131, ENG 101, PSY 123, TIT 101, and TDL 101.
These courses will be sufficient for the semester.
Students exempted from ENG 101 and 102 through the YDDS exam do not need to take these courses.
Those who have completed equivalent courses at another institution may request course equivalency (intibak) through the Student Information System within 10 days of registration.

2nd-Year Students

Students must first retake any previously failed courses. The following are compulsory for second-year students:
SOS 201, SOS 207, SOS 217, SOS 219.
In addition, they must take at least one elective among SOS 209, SOS 215, FEL 241, and FEL 251.
Students who do not choose one of these may select a non-departmental elective offered in Turkish within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Students with sufficient GPA may take upper-level courses, if allowed by the system.

3rd-Year Students

Third-year students follow the old curriculum. They must first complete any previously failed compulsory courses.
Compulsory courses: SOS 301, SOS 303, SOS 307.
FEL 351 is offered for students pursuing a pedagogical formation certificate and counts as a non-departmental elective.
Students not taking FEL 351 must take a non-departmental elective from another Turkish-medium department within the Faculty.

Departmental electives may be chosen among SOS 309, SOS 311, SOS 317, and SOS 319.
Students wishing to take more than one departmental elective may replace electives from previous semesters with current ones in consultation with their advisor.
Students taking upper-level courses may only choose 4th-year compulsory courses.

4th-Year Students

Fourth-year students also follow the old curriculum. They must first complete all failed compulsory courses.
Compulsory courses: SOS 401 and SOS 403.
These courses are opened in sections under each instructor and have limited quotas. Students should select from available sections.

Students must take four departmental electives from SOS 415, SOS 417, and SOS 433 courses.
The course SOS 413 Sociology of Art has been canceled due to the instructor’s overseas assignment. Even if it appears in the system, students should not select this course.

Students needing additional credits for graduation may take elective courses from the 2nd or 3rd-year electives.
They must also fulfill their non-departmental elective requirement by selecting a course from another Turkish-medium department within the Faculty.

Students Extending Their Study Period

Such students must first retake failed compulsory courses and ensure all requirements of their curriculum are met.
After completing compulsory courses, they may take departmental or non-departmental electives to reach 240 ECTS credits.

Double Major (ÇAP) and Minor (Yandal) Students

These students register according to the protocol between the two departments and must select their courses in consultation with their advisors.

Vertical Transfer (DGS) Students

Students admitted through vertical transfer may request course equivalency within 10 days of registration.
Even if their previous courses are accepted, they cannot take upper-level courses in their first semester, as the system only allows this for students with a sufficient GPA.
They must comply with the course selection rules of the class level they are placed in.

Inter-Institutional or Central Placement Transfer Students

Students must follow the rules of the academic year corresponding to their placement.
If they have previously identified make-up courses, they must take those first.
After completing those, they may select courses according to the current year’s rules.
If they wish to take more courses, they may choose compulsory courses from the upper year.

Important Information

Except for TIT 101, TDL 101, and ENG 101, all courses will be conducted via AYBUZEM (the online education platform).
In case of schedule conflicts (e.g., retaken or minor courses), attendance responsibility lies with the student.

Students who failed a course due to low grades but not due to absence are not required to attend classes again, whereas those retaking courses for grade improvement must attend.

Students may contact their advisors via email when necessary. Advisor email addresses are available on the department’s webpage.
