Cross Workshops 5: Engagement in the Ottoman Law was held.

Cross Workshops are academic activities, held by the AYBU Faculty of Law, in which various interdisciplinary discussions took place.  

Cross Workshop 5 titled ‘the Engagement in the Ottoman Law’ was held.

Our Faculty’s Dean Prof. Dr. Hayri BOZGEYİK, Head of the Department of History of Law Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet KILINÇ and Assist. Prof. Dr. Zeynep DÖNMEZ from the Department of Civil Law participated to the workshop.

The topic and discussion question were introduced by Research Assistant Semra Betül DOĞANGÜZEL. In the workshop, the following topics and related problems were discussed in the context of the History of Law and Civil Law: ‘the role of law on people’s engagement proposals; the legal aspects of engagement in the Ottoman Law and its meaning in the Civil Law; the possibility of mehr (an Islamic legal practice) during the engagement period; whether the law might regulate relationship of engaged people; whether there might be any reparation if people break off an engagement; what to be done with the gifts given to each other if people break off an engagement from a legal and social perspective.

The programme ended with a Q&A session.
