About the Department

The Department of Visual Communication Design aims to educate creative, open-minded visual designers who can closely follow changing communication technologies and combine theory with practice. The department was established in 2012 within Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University and started its undergraduate education in the 2019–2020 academic year.

The curriculum is structured to develop the ability to communicate effectively through visual and audiovisual media, generate creative solutions to design problems, and use contemporary software and production technologies. The language of instruction is Turkish, and students are admitted through the central placement system based on verbal scores.

Who Is This Program Suitable For?

Art and Design

Students who are interested in visual thinking, drawing, color and form relationships, photography, moving image, typography, and digital production can benefit greatly from the practice-oriented education of the department.

Creative Problem Solving

Delivering a message to the right target audience through an effective visual language requires openness to research, idea development, experimentation, critique, and re-production processes.

Digital Technologies

Interest in computer-aided design, animation, video, 3D modeling, interface design, and interaction design provides an important advantage throughout the education process.

Observation and Research

Students who follow visual culture, benefit from different disciplines, and are open to teamwork and critical thinking can produce stronger outcomes in design projects.

Educational Structure

The Visual Communication Design Program does not consist only of theoretical courses. Since practice-oriented courses such as drawing and basic design have a significant place in the curriculum, the program is built around art and design production.

Starting from the second year, courses with a digital focus such as computer-aided design, animation, 3D modeling, and similar fields become more prominent. Students are advised to consider that they may need technical equipment such as a personal computer and a graphic tablet during their studies.

Workplace Training: In the fourth year of the program, there is a compulsory one-semester Workplace Training component that enables students to gain experience in professional production environments.

Classrooms, Studios, and Laboratory Facilities

Practice-based courses in the department are conducted in studios, computer laboratories, classrooms, and a photography studio arranged according to different production needs.

  • 3 Practice Studios Drawing tables, easels, projection systems, and working facilities suited to different course requirements.
  • 2 Computer Laboratories Digital design and production environments with a total capacity of 60 computers.
  • Photography Studio A studio space and basic shooting equipment for photography and visual production work.

Career Opportunities for Graduates

Graduates of the department receive the title “Visual Designer.” They may work in areas such as advertising and promotion, graphic design, corporate identity, art direction, illustration, animation, photography, video, cinema production and post-production, character and environment design, the game industry, packaging design, publication design, interface and interaction design, and web and social media design.

Graduates may work in advertising agencies, design studios, media organizations, television channels, production companies, game companies, public institutions, and the design, marketing, corporate communication, and public relations units of private companies. They may also work as freelance designers or pursue an academic career through graduate studies.

Academic Staff

Our department has 5 faculty members, 2 lecturers, and 2 research assistants. The academic staff have expertise in a range of fields, including graphic design, illustration, typography, animation, 3D modeling, creative coding, visual culture, art education, and media studies.
