WHAT IS LEGE TREATMENT?

The form of treatment using medical leeches is called Hirudotherapy. Leeches suck blood by biting the area they cling to. They secrete a liquid containing more than 100 Bioactive substances to the area where they suck blood. This secretion acts like a mixture of many drugs. Studies have shown that the secretion of medicinal leech has many effects such as antibacterial pain reliever, antirheumatic, blood pressure regulator, antidepressant, antioxidant, muscle relaxant, immune system regulator.

SITUATIONS WHERE LEGE TREATMENT CAN BE APPLIED:

Degenerative joint diseases (osteoarthritis)

In reducing pain in lower extremity varicose vein diseases,

Reducing pain in diseases such as lateral epicondylitis,

It is used in venous insufficiency after flap surgery, venous insufficiency after replantation and revascularization.

CONDITIONS WHERE LEGE TREATMENT IS NOT APPLIED:

Bleeding Diatheses (such as Hemophilia), presence of active bleeding focus, severe anemia

Use of blood thinners before surgery

Pregnancy and breastfeeding, allergy to leeches or other creatures

Severe psychiatric disorders that affect treatment compliance

In cases of leukemia, bone marrow suppression and cancer

In cases of gastrointestinal bleeding

Those with uncontrolled diabetes or heart failure

Having had a disease such as gastrointestinal bleeding in the last month,

Leech Therapy is not applied before and after surgical procedures.

In the presence of liver cirrhosis, Infection (HIV positivity, etc.)

In dialysis patients (as vital signs of patients on dialysis are very variable)

In the presence of a pacemaker, in children (under 18 years old)

Leech therapy is not applied during the menstrual period, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

REGIONS THAT SHOULD NOT BE APPLIED IN LEGE TREATMENT:

Soft skin areas (such as the eyelid and its immediate surroundings)

Keratinized areas (such as palms, soles)

Above the Important Veins (Neck, Under the Chin, Armpit, Groin etc.)

COMPLICATIONS AFTER LEGE TREATMENT:

prolonged bleeding

There may be redness, rash and itching at the leech bite point.

Aeromonas hydrophila infection in the body of the leech

A different leech should be used once for each patient.
