Abstract:

Multilevel inverters have emerged as a promising solution for high-power and medium-voltage applications due to their ability to generate high-quality output waveforms with reduced switching stress and lower electromagnetic interference. However, the presence of lower-order harmonics in the output voltage remains a critical challenge. Selective Harmonic Elimination (SHE) is a widely adopted pulse-width modulation technique that addresses this issue by selectively eliminating specific undesirable harmonics while maintaining the desired fundamental component. This paper presents an overview of the SHE technique applied to multilevel inverter topologies, focusing on its mathematical formulation, switching angle optimization, and harmonic performance. The nonlinear transcendental equations governing SHE are discussed, along with various solution approaches such as analytical methods, numerical techniques, and evolutionary optimization algorithms. The effectiveness of SHE in reducing total harmonic distortion (THD) and improving power quality is analyzed for different multilevel inverter configurations. The study highlights the advantages, limitations, and practical implementation considerations of SHE, demonstrating its suitability for efficient and high-performance multilevel inverter applications.
