SBF Meetings 51 Our New Trends in Global Politics Program Has Been Held.

SBF Meetings 51

The 51st SBF meetings were held on 08.04.2021 through digital platforms with the title of "New Trends in Global Politics." Our program was organized by Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University Department of Political Science and Public Administration. The meeting started with the opening speech of Prof. Dr. Yilmaz Bingol.

Prof Bingöl pointed out that the concept of "Nation-State" is one of the points that should be addressed when examining new trends in global politics. Prof Bingöl has discussed the perspective of the nation-state in the last decade through the concepts of "nationalism and political closure". The program emphasized a structural change in the administration and bureaucracy in Turkey with the new political trend perceptions.

Doç Dr. Nebi Miş, director of SETA Domestic Politics Department, evaluated the new tendencies in global politics through specific dynamics. Dr. Miş emphasized that the world order is not only in a certain period but in a continuous change.  In addition, Dr. Miş, noting that there have been significant changes in global politics since the 1990s, and the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a new direction in global politics and will continue to happen. Dr. Miş evaluated this situation through the US elections and Trump-Biden policies.

Dr. Miş stated that one of the new trends in politics is "protectionism," which drew attention to the protectionist market understanding of the USA during the Trump period.  Furthermore, Dr. Miş emphasized that a protectionist market understanding rather than the liberal free market in the Trump era has become widespread, and this approach has reflections on politics. On the other hand, he emphasized in the program that Trump's presidency has reactivated populist-nationalist movements worldwide. Along with the new tendencies in politics, there are changes in the content of the concepts. Dr. Miş was drawing attention to the fact that one of these concepts is globalization.  Dr. Miş stated that multiculturalism gradually decreased towards the end of 2010, introversion and radicalism increased. Dr. Miş interpreted this situation in terms of the increase of racism and hostility to immigrants.  Dr. Miş emphasized that globalization has made progress in technology, the internet, and logistics, but intellectually, xenophobia is increasing. It was pointed out that this situation negatively affected institutions such as the European Union.

In the question and answer section of our program, the reflections of new trends in global politics on Turkey, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global politics, and digitalization were discussed in various dimensions. Turkey's approach to new trends in global politics has been evaluated through political system change.
