The aircraft accident drill organized under the coordination of the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMİ) Esenboğa Airport Directorate was carried out this year with a scenario that rivaled movie scenes. As part of the “Large-Scale Emergency Plan,” the drill simulated a passenger aircraft forced to make an emergency landing due to a technical malfunction and chemical leak after takeoff.
The drill involved the participation of teams from AFAD, the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department, UMKE, Gendarmerie Search and Rescue (JAK), Airport Rescue and Firefighting Directorate (ARFF), as well as volunteers from Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University (AYBÜ) and Ankara University students.
AYBÜ Civil Defense and Firefighting Program students played an active role in critical stages such as first response at the scene, evacuation of the injured, firefighting, and use of protective equipment against chemical spills. In the drill, conducted under realistic conditions, AYBÜ students received full marks from field teams for their calm, coordinated, and professional attitude. The drill, which simulated a real crisis environment, was successfully completed with the participation of approximately 400 personnel, 50 vehicles, a search and rescue helicopter, and two K-9 dogs.
