Physiotherapy and rehabilitation is a scientific field in which physiotherapists apply the necessary approaches to improve and maintain functional capacity, particularly in cases of diseases, injuries, aging, and painful conditions that cause movement and functional deficiencies, and can be applied in many areas of medicine.
A physiotherapist is a healthcare professional with professional autonomy who measures and tests related to their profession to regulate and increase the physical activity and mobility of healthy individuals, and in cases of injury, disease, congenital disability, musculoskeletal disorders, or other conditions that cause pain and functional disorders, physiotherapists determine the functional limitations, pain, disability, and abilities of individuals using special measurement, evaluation, and examination methods, and based on the diagnosis and treatment of specialist doctors, physiotherapists plan, implement on physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs to improve function and functional capacity. In addition, they plan appropriate exercises and protective programs to maintain the health of healthy individuals.
The Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation at the Faculty of Health Sciences of Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University is a 4-year undergraduate program and includes practical and theoretical professional courses in addition to basic and clinical science courses that contain the latest evidence-based information. The language of instruction is Turkish. Graduates of the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation receive the “Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Diploma" (Bachelor of Science) and the title of "Physiotherapist".
Physiotherapists work in many areas such as pediatric diseases, athlete health, respiratory physiotherapy, neurological diseases, orthopedic problems, hand rehabilitation, rheumatological diseases, geriatric rehabilitation, orthotics and prosthetics, technology development, cancer, and many others; in health protection, sports centers, public and private clinics and hospitals, rehabilitation centers, in special education centers and schools for the disabled, education and research institutions, in industry and workplace health units, aged care homes and institutions providing home care services. Physiotherapists can continue their education at the graduate level. Physiotherapists who wish to pursue an academic career can continue their postgraduate studies at universities in Turkey and abroad, and work as academicians or clinicians.
