The first Scientific Research Project (BAP), conducted under the coordination of the Learning Advisory Program within the Learning and Teaching Center (ÖĞMER) at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University, has been successfully completed after a two-year duration. Titled “Examining the Relationships Between Cognitive Flexibility, Autonomy, and Critical Thinking: A Mixed-Methods Study,” the project has examined the developmental processes of our students who have participated in the RALL 101-102 Advising in Language Learning courses since 2022. The primary objective of the research was to demonstrate the impact of these courses on students’ cognitive flexibility, learner autonomy, and critical thinking skills, and to scientifically test the reciprocal relationships among these skills.

The findings indicate that learner autonomy is embedded within a developmental relationship that is mutually shaped by cognitive flexibility and critical thinking. This result advances the current theoretical understanding of the dynamic interaction between autonomy, adaptability, and higher-order cognitive skills in the context of higher education. By integrating psychometric rigor with students’ lived experiences, the study has made a unique contribution to the development of evidence-based practices in higher education.

Qualitative data collected from students also supports the quantitative findings. Feedback such as “This was the most enjoyable course I’ve taken throughout my entire university career, and I attended it voluntarily without feeling any pressure” and “This course should be taught as a core course in all departments”
