Ankara Yildirim Beyazit University Medical Specialization Education Comprehensive Processes
Postgraduate Medical Education at the Faculty of Medicine
General practitioners who have completed their six-year undergraduate medical education and intend to pursue specialization in a specific discipline must successfully pass the Medical Specialty Selection Examination (TUS). The TUS is administered biannually by the Student Selection and Placement Center (OSYM) in April and September. Candidates who secure placement in their chosen department through the TUS continue their training for the statutory duration designated by the respective department. Upon the successful completion of this training, they are conferred the title of Medical Specialist. International students desiring to undertake specialization training at our Faculty may apply within the quotas allocated by the Council of Higher Education (YOK) for countries with mutual agreements. Following the evaluation and approval of these applications, candidates may commence their training at our Faculty in the capacity of honorary physicians. Furthermore, international candidates may also apply for the honorary physician quotas established by the Departments of our Faculty by successfully passing the TUS. Medical specialization students at the Ankara Yildirim Beyazit University Faculty of Medicine are governed by the Regulation on Specialization Education in Medicine and Dentistry (published in the Official Gazette dated 03.09.2022) and the Directive on the Education and Examination of Medical Specialization Students.
Our Faculty regulates the training and practical applications of medical specialization, subspecialty, and protocol-based subspecialty programs; endeavors to enhance educational quality; and ensures the standardization of educational activities and practices during the specialization and subspecialty training processes within the respective Departments and Divisions. It further ensures that the medical specialization training programs implemented within the Departments and Divisions remain strictly compliant with TUKMOS (Board of Medical Specialties Curriculum Formulation and Standard Setting System), Educational Standards, and the national standards of medical specialization education.

Fundamental Provisions for Research Assistants Pursuing Medical Specialization
Program Director Evaluation Form: A Program Director Evaluation Form is completed biannually for medical specialization students commencing their principal or subspecialty training, calculated from their date of commencement. The Program Director formally documents their assessment and convictions regarding the specialization student's professional commitment, clinical and academic performance, research acumen, administrative capabilities, and professional ethics, corroborated by written justifications. This evaluation is subsequently ratified by the institutional education coordinator. Candidates receiving an adverse evaluation score are issued a formal written warning by the institutional education coordinator within fifteen days. The training program of a medical specialization student who incurs two consecutive adverse evaluation scores (indicating failure) is reassigned by the Board of Medical Specialties (TUK), necessitating the continuation of their training at an alternative institution. A one-year extension is appended to the training duration of a student whose program is thus altered. Should a medical specialization student receive two consecutive adverse evaluation scores in the subsequent training program, their affiliation with the specialization education is terminated, irrespective of their duration of service. Active medical specialization students are obligated to present a minimum of one seminar and two literature or case reviews annually.
Specialization Thesis and Evaluation: Principal medical specialization students are mandated to prepare a thesis to qualify for the specialization education final examination. Within the initial half of the specialization training period, an original thesis topic aligned with the departmental curriculum, alongside a thesis advisor (or advisors) possessing requisite educational qualifications in the relevant discipline and actively employed within the institution, is designated by the education coordinator upon the resolution of the departmental academic board, and formally reported to the Deanship. Irrespective of the thesis topic or research methodology, obtaining Ethics Committee approval is a mandatory prerequisite for all thesis research. The thesis research of the medical specialization student is supervised by the thesis advisor under the oversight of the program director, with a Thesis Progress Report Form submitted quarterly. The completed thesis must be submitted to our Deanship no later than three months prior to the culmination of the specialization training period. The evaluation of the specialization dossier necessitates the fulfillment of the following criteria: 1. Comprehensive documentation verifying the successful completion of all clinical rotations, 2. Complete submission of Program Director Evaluation Forms, 3. The departmental academic board resolution designating the thesis topic and advisor, 4. Ethics Committee approval, 5. Complete submission of Thesis Progress Report Forms, 6. Adherence of the thesis to the Ankara Yildirim Beyazit University Thesis Drafting Manual.
Rotations: Medical specialization students must complete their mandatory rotations, as prescribed by the TUK, no later than three months prior to the expiration of their statutory specialization training period.
Specialization Education Final Examination: Subspecialty medical specialization students who have successfully completed their training duration and rotations, as well as principal medical specialization students who fulfill these prerequisites and whose theses have been accepted, qualify to sit for the specialization education final examination. To convene the examination juries for subspecialty training students, a formal application accompanied by the departmental or divisional academic board resolution must be submitted to the Deanship no later than one month prior to the conclusion of the specialization training period. The final examination is conducted in two phases: a theoretical professional knowledge assessment and a practical skills assessment. Candidates must attain a minimum score of 60 out of 100 in both phases to be deemed successful. The status of a specialization student who fails or is absent from the final examination is reported to the Ministry within 15 working days, inclusive of a reasoned examination protocol and the scheduled date for the secondary examination. The secondary examination is administered within three months following the initial examination date. Candidates failing or absenting themselves from the secondary examination are dismissed from their specialization student status, with the outcome reported to the Ministry within fifteen working days via a reasoned protocol. The candidate is subsequently granted two additional examination rights to be exercised within the following three months. The dates and host institutions of the Examination Jury members are designated by the Ministry. The training rights of candidates who fail or fail to attend these subsequent examinations are definitively terminated. Medical specialization students who successfully conclude their training continue their clinical duties as specialization students within their affiliated department or division, retaining their staff positions, until the finalization of the immediate subsequent state service obligation lottery process.
Post-Graduate Exit Formalities for Medical Research Assistants
Research Assistants shall maintain their clinical duties until the conclusion of the immediate state service obligation lottery process following the specialization examination. Research Assistants whose appointments are finalized must complete their severance procedures from the personnel units of the Ankara Bilkent City Hospital or Yenimahalle Training and Research Hospital, where they were assigned under the affiliation agreement, and subsequently present themselves to our Faculty to finalize their discharge formalities.
