Young Designers Mentorship Program: Disaster and Emergency Solutions Completed
The event titled “Young Designers Mentorship Program – Disaster and Emergency Solutions,” organized in collaboration between the Department of Industrial Design at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University (AYBÜ) and the Çubuk Science and Art Center (BİLSEM), was completed with productive outcomes.
As part of the program, second-year students from AYBÜ’s Department of Industrial Design came together with 12 secondary school students studying at Çubuk BİLSEM in a mentorship-based working process. Throughout the event, students carried out design studies aimed at meeting basic needs that arise during disasters and emergency situations. During the process, students identified problem areas based on real-life scenarios, developed different solution alternatives, and materialized these ideas through sketches, diagrams, 3D models, and presentations. The workshop process aimed not only to produce design outputs, but also to strengthen skills such as taking responsibility, communicating, and thinking collaboratively. While the process enabled university students to develop their mentorship skills, it also helped BİLSEM students become familiar with the design discipline at an early age.
The event was carried out with the participation and support of Prof. Dr. İhsan Toktaş, Dean of the faculty; Dr. Taner Aşçı, Vice Dean; İlhan Eranıl, Çubuk District Director of National Education; Kasım Kılınç, Branch Director of National Education; Yunus Nasır, Director of Çubuk BİLSEM; and Yener Özoğuz, Deputy Director. At the end of the event, the design proposals developed by the students were exhibited and shared. Focusing on a socially critical topic such as disasters and emergencies, this workshop made visible the role of design in generating solutions to social problems. The Department of Industrial Design at AYBÜ aims to promote a design approach centered on social benefit through similar initiatives.
