The way we live in and inhabit spaces have become topics in the discussions around the ever-changing world with its mixtures in spatial, social and environmental dimensions. Due to the climate crisis and strong social transformations, we are confronted with a number of challenges including global warming, resource depletion, health problems, natural disasters, inequality, lack of livability and life quality etc. In today's world, we are faced with a number of challenges, including global warming, resource depletion, biodiversity loss, health issues, natural disasters, inequality, and social problems related to urban living. To adapt to these challenges and achieve a sustainable future, we need to design resilient living spaces. Resilient living spaces are able to absorb, compensate, repair, and equip against future shocks, such as natural disasters, climate change, and rapid urbanization. They are essential for maintaining the continuity of life quality in cities. The studio project likes to open debates on envisionings for living spaces in regard to situations of pre-quake and question their resilience for the shaping of better cities.
What are the specific challenges of designing resilient living spaces? How can we design living spaces that are both sustainable and resilient? How can we promote social cohesion and economic opportunity through our designs? How can we create living spaces that are both livable and visioning?
The project site is located in Ataköy, a suburb of Istanbul with a history of vulnerability to earthquakes. The project will be held in collaboration with the third-year design studio from Istanbul Technical University.
The project will be supported with seminars on resilient urban spaces, living spaces and earthquake, discussions, collaborative workshops, guest speakers, and jury members.
