A four-week Mosaic Workshop was organized within the scope of the elective course ARCHE304 Islamic Architectural Ornaments, conducted by Asst. Prof. Dr. Cemile Feyzan Şimşek during the Spring Semester of the 2024-2025 Academic Year at the AYBU Department of Architecture.
As part of the workshop activities, architecture students initially received instruction from Prof. Dr. İhsan Toktaş on the methodology of drawing mosaic patterns featured in architectural monuments. Subsequently, the students selected an architectural work and prepared one-to-one scale drawings of a specific mosaic pattern from the chosen monument, intended for practical application. Workshop activities commenced with appropriately sizing the mosaic stones, followed by the completion of the sanding process. Following a dedicated three-week phase of stone cutting and preparation, the prepared stones were painted and subsequently affixed with adhesive onto substrates prepared according to their respective designs. Upon completion of the stone adhesion process, the artworks were finalized with the application of varnish.
We extend our sincere gratitude, particularly to our esteemed Dean, Prof. Dr. İhsan Toktaş, as well as to Master Instructor Selma Hastürk for her unstinting efforts throughout the process, and to our invaluable students. We look forward to many more successful endeavors together.
