Topic: A VR-Assisted Human-in-the-Loop Cyber-Physical Framework for Battery Aging Analysis Based
on Real-Time Driver Pedal Dynamics
Room : A424
Abstract: As electric vehicles become more common worldwide, battery life and performance
predictions have become more important than ever. Standard driving cycles, such as the WLTP or
NEDC, may not fully reflect the dynamic habits of drivers, such as sudden accelerations and harsh
braking, and their effects on the battery in terms of electrochemical degradation. This research
focuses on a cyber-physical system approach to driver behavior, pedal dynamics and battery ageing
processes. Accompanied by traffic scenarios designed in a virtual reality (VR) setting, real-time
responses of drivers over professional pedal units are captured and these data are reflected to the
lithium-ion batteries with a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) infrastructure. Supported by PyBaMM-based
digital twins of the physical experiments, microscopic aging processes that cannot be directly
observed, such as growth of the SEI layer and mechanical stress, are studied in detail for aggressive
and cautious driving profiles. Focusing on the human factor for the technical analysis, this work aims
at providing a novel view for the development of advanced battery management systems (BMS) of
the future and at developing driver behavior based life prediction models
