Topic: Generation of a Low-Cost 3D Lidar Scanning System Using a 2D Lidar
Link or Room: A424
Abstract:
This project aims to develop a low-cost 3D LiDAR scanning system using a conventional 2D LiDAR sensor. Instead of using an expensive commercial 3D LiDAR, the system expands 2D scan data into three-dimensional point cloud data through a controlled mechanical tilt mechanism.
In the proposed system, the 2D LiDAR collects distance measurements while a motorized platform changes the scanning angle. Each scan is combined with its corresponding angle information and transformed into 3D coordinates. As a result, the system can generate a basic three-dimensional representation of the surrounding environment.
The developed prototype is intended for low-cost mapping, object detection, environmental scanning and robotic perception applications. This approach provides an affordable and practical alternative for educational and experimental 3D scanning systems.
