To update higher education curricula in the context of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, a workshop titled "Integration of Artificial Intelligence into the Curriculum" was held on September 10, 2026. The workshop was centered around invited presentations, an informational session on YÖK's 2026 Micro-Credentials Framework, and a negotiation roundtable formed with the participation of our department's faculty members.
Attending the event as an invited speaker, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Kemal Özdemir provided important insights on "AI and Curriculum Design," while Assist. Prof. Dr. Fatma Aladağ discussed the role of AI in research processes under the title of "Digital Humanities." The negotiation roundtable of the Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University Department of Information and Records Management included our department's faculty members Prof. Dr. Mustafa Bayter, Assist. Prof. Dr. Müge Akbulut, Assist. Prof. Dr. Demet Soylu, and Res. Assist. Ayşe Nur Alagöz. Additionally, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Özel from Ankara University and Birgül Ünal from the Presidential Nation's Library attended the session and provided their contributions.
As a result of the negotiations, concrete decisions were made regarding the update of the department curriculum centered on AI. It was agreed that the department should define its own pool of micro-credentials and that quality-assured certificates obtained by students from within or outside the university could be converted into digital badges and recorded on their transcripts. Regarding the curriculum, it was recommended that basic digital and AI literacy be mandatory for all students, that the existing Information Literacy course be updated in this direction, and that the introduction of a new course titled "Artificial Intelligence and Information Management" be evaluated.
In terms of course integration processes, it was emphasized that assignment models—such as the one applied by Assist. Prof. Dr. Müge Akbulut in the "Database Management Systems" course, where students compare and critically reason through AI outputs rather than copying them—should be expanded. Assist. Prof. Dr. Demet Soylu also stated that similar approaches could be adapted to the "Marketing of Information Services" course. Furthermore, taking into account the low AI success rates pointed out by Prof. Dr. Mustafa Bayter, the idea of rescaling the Cataloging and Classification courses and adding AI courses to the newly opened spaces was discussed during the event.
As part of the workshop's follow-up activities, conferences titled "Information Management and the Impact of AI on the Future of the Profession" featuring Prof. Dr. Nevzat Özel in October, and "Artificial Intelligence and Library Services" featuring Birgül Ünal in November, are planned to be held.
