Abstract

This thesis presents AMUX-VR, a behavior-driven adaptive virtual reality framework designed to respond to user behavior in real time within immersive cultural heritage environments. The framework integrates behavioral observation, operational state estimation, task-specific visual, auditory, and interactive responses, and the recording of subsequent user behavior within a closed-loop architecture.

AMUX-VR was implemented in a virtual madrasa containing six task environments and evaluated through a user study in which 34 participants completed both Adaptive and Static conditions. The findings showed that the system consistently executed its behavior-responsive rules, produced stronger short-window reductions in head movement following high-motion episodes under Adaptive exposure, and generated environmental changes that participants could perceive. However, these effects did not occur uniformly across all tasks or general user-experience measures.

The thesis also proposes a five-layer evaluation approach that distinguishes behavioral input, system inference, applied adaptation, subsequent user behavior, and task or experiential consequences. This approach contributes to the systematic evaluation of adaptive virtual reality systems by examining not only their technical operation but also their behavioral and experiential consequences for users.
