On 5-6 November 2022, a trip to Istanbul was made within the scope of ARCH 421 Republican Era Turkish Architecture and ARCHE 425 Historical Water Systems courses.
On the first day of the tour, August Jachmund’s Sirkeci Train Station, Deutsche Orient Bank; Vedat Tek’s Sirkeci Post and Telegraph Ministry building (Grand Post Office), Eminönü Mesadet Han and Hobyar Masjid; Mimar Kemalettin’s 1st Vakıf İşhanı and the 4th Vakıf İşhanı (Legacy Ottoman Hotel); Alexander Vallury’s the Istanbul Erkek Lisesi (Düyun-u Umumiye) buildings were examined.
On the second day of the trip, the water structures in Kırkçeşme Water System and Taksim Water System were examined. Kırkçeşme Water System was built by Mimar Sinan to supply water to Istanbul during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. The first part of the Taksim Water System was built in 1731 and the facility took its final shape in 1839. The historical aqueducts and dams that are part of these water systems were examined under the supervision of İSKİ Vakıf Su Branch Directorate. Sultan Mahmut Dam, Valide Dam, which is part of Taksim Water System, Büyük Dam, Kirazlı Dam, Uzun Kemer, Eğri Kemer, Çifte Havuz, Başhavuz, and Mağlova Kemeri, which is the magnificent work of Mimar Sinan, are among the structures examined.
