Nobel Prize-winning scientist Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar's name was given.
Traditional Complementary and Integrative Medicine Department Lecturer Assoc. Dr. In the studies conducted under the leadership of Murat Koç, a new plant species belonging to the genus "bolanthus", popularly known as "airlotu", was discovered in the İncehisar district of Afyonkarahisar.
With the contributions of Ecologist Prof. Dr. Ergin Hamzaoğlu and molecular biologist Assoc. Prof. Dr. İlker Büyük, the endemic plant, which was discovered in studies carried out , was given by Nobel Prize-winning scientist Prof. Dr. It was named “bolanthus saint-sancarii” after Aziz Sancar.
“Sancar came to mind with his stance in the scientific community”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Koç told Anadolu Agency (AA) that there are 10 different species of the bolanthus group.
Explaining that the plant they found among the volcanic rocks was an unprecedented species in the world, Koç stated that they wanted to attribute the discovered plant to Aziz Sancar.
Koç said, “It was a very upright plant and Aziz Sancar came to mind with his stance in the scientific community. We decided with our teammates that the name 'Aziz Sancar' would suit this genre." he said.
Expressing that they will investigate the usability of the plant in the field of alternative medicine in the next period, Koç said, "It has a high potential to be a medicine, but we can say clear things after obtaining the values and results." said.
“It can also be considered as a debt of loyalty”
Rector Prof. Dr. Metin Doğan, on the other hand, stated that since 2015, research has been carried out in the center for the development of pharmaceutical materials and herbal treatments.
Stating that a plant species suitable for these applications was discovered during the research, Doğan said:
“It is a source of pride for Turkish scientists to find this plant species. We have deemed it appropriate to name the plant Aziz Sancar, both to set an example for future generations and young people, and to show the point Turkish science has reached in the world. This can also be considered as a debt of loyalty to a scientist who represents our country in the best possible way.” said.
