YDMS-AGE (Proficiency Exam): 9-10-11 September 2026

 

Important Announcements

Newly Enrolled (Enrolled in 2026) Undergraduate Students
• Students who have not applied for the YDDS (Placement) and YDMS-AGE (Proficiency) exams will not be placed in preparatory classes. For this reason, those students must apply and take at least the YDDS exam. Telephone number for details: +90312 906 28 01 / +90312 906 18 05/06

Undergraduate Students in Their Second Year of Preparatory Class (Enrolled in 2025)
• Undergraduate students who are repeating the preparatory class will first take the YDDS (Placement) exam.
After taking the YDDS, the students will then take the YDMS-AGE (Proficiency) exam.
• Those who fail the YDMS-AGE will be placed in the preparatory class according to their score in the YDDS. Students who have failed the YDMS-AGE and who have not taken the YDDS  will not be placed in preparatory classes.
• In their second year, these students may choose to take the YDMS-AGE by studying on their own and not taking the preparatory class, and thus they will not be registered for the preparatory class, but they will retain their right to take the YDMS-AGE. Students who wish to exercise this right must apply to the School of Foreign Languages Secretariat with a petition immediately after the exam results are announced. Undergraduate Students Who Finished Their Second Year of Preparatory Class (Enrolled in 2024)
• Undergraduate students who finished their second year of preparatory class will only take the YDMS-AGE (Proficiency) exam.
• Those who fail to get 69.5 (or 79.5 for English Translation & Interpretation Department) or higher will be expelled.

Graduate Students
• Graduate students who have newly enrolled or are repeating the preparatory class will first take the YDDS (Placement) exam.
• Those who score 59.5 or higher on the YDDS will be exempt from the preparatory class by taking the YDMS-AGE (Proficiency) exam.
• Those who score below 59.5 on the YDDS and those who fail the YDMS-AGE will be placed in the preparatory class.
• These students may, if they wish, choose not to study in the preparatory class and study on their own and take the YDMS-AGE, and thus they will not be registered in the preparatory class, but they will retain their right to take the YDMS-AGE. Students who wish to exercise this right must apply to the School of Foreign Languages Secretariat with a petition immediately after the exam results are announced. Exam Information

Placement Exam (YDDS) (100 points)

*** Students from 100% or 30% English medium departments will take this exam to be able to take the YDMS-AGE Exam to start their departments. These students who get 59.5 from the Placement Exam are allowed to take the YDMS-AGE Exam. 

*** Students newly enrolled in Turkish medium departments will take this exam to be exempt from compulsory ING 100 / ING 101-102 / ING 103-104 Courses. These students who get 59.5 and higher from the Placement Exam are exempt from ING 100 / ING 101-102 / ING 103-104. 

Content: 100 questions (grammar, vocabulary, reading); mistakes do not reduce the points for the correct answers 

Duration: 100 minutes

Aim: This exam helps the students see their level of English. Therefore, it is important to answer the questions accordingly.

Level accommodation:

0-24 - A level (beginners)

24.5-49 - A+ level (elementary

49.5-74 - B level (pre-intermediate)

74.5-100 - B+ level (intermediate)

Students who get 59.5 on the Placement Exam are allowed to take the YDMS-AGE Exam.

Proficiency Exam (YDMS-AGE) - 100 points

Content: WRITTEN PART

4 listening sections (5-8 questions each; in total 25 questions) - 25 points 

4-5 reading texts (5-8 questions each; in total 25 questions) - 25 points

One writing task - opinion essay - 25 points

Content: SPEAKING PART

Speaking part - two tasks - 25 points

First task - 3 short questions - immediate response - 10 points

Second task - 1 statement - 1 minute thinking time and 2 minutes talking about the statement - 15 points

Duration

Written part - 140 minutes

Speaking part - 6 to 8 minutes (for each student)

Passing grade: 69.5 (79.5 for English Translation and Interpretation department), mistakes do not reduce the points for the correct answers

Aim: The aim of the YDMS-AGE Exam is to determine whether the students are ready to take courses in English in their departments. If they pass the YDMS-AGE Exam, they will continue their study in their departments. If they cannot pass the YDMS-AGE Exam, they will continue their study in the School of Foreign Languages to learn English.
