  • 26 March 2019

Traditional and complementary medicine practices such as leech, cupping, hypnosis and ozone therapy were included in both master's and doctoral programs at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University for the first time in Turkey.

Rector Prof. Dr. Metin Doğan gave information about the studies carried out at the Traditional and Complementary Medicine Application Center within the university.

Stating that this field has become increasingly popular in recent years, Doğan said that there are faculties that provide training on traditional medicine as well as modern medicine, especially in China. Doğan noted that in addition to modern medicine, traditional medicine education was given together in the faculties in China for the first 3 years, and that these two branches were separated with the 4th grade and physician candidates continued their education.

Explaining that there are hospitals abroad where modern and traditional medicine practices are combined, Doğan said that this method is also being used in other developed European countries, especially in Germany, England and France.

Doğan stated that in Turkey, units have been established in training and research hospitals and universities in order to prevent these practices from being carried out by incompetent people, especially in places called "under the stairs".

“You must be a medical doctor or pharmacist in order to receive the training”

Noting that AYBU started a pioneering work by including traditional medicine practices in the scope of education, Doğan said that the most physicians and pharmacists were trained in the Traditional and Complementary Medicine Application Center within their body.

“A lot of medical research is carried out in the field of traditional medicine practices abroad. By taking this field into medical education, we started a pioneering study in Turkey.” Doğan also stated that for the first time in Turkey, the Department of Traditional Medicine, established by the AYBU at the Institute of Public Health, will provide training on traditional and complementary medicine at both master's and doctoral levels.

Stating that the master's and doctorate programs will start in the next academic term, Doğan noted that in order to receive these trainings, one must be a physician or pharmacist.

Doğan underlined the importance of drug production in traditional and complementary medicine, and explained that veterinarians and biologists can also take part in these fields.

Prof. Dr. Doğan said, “Physicians, pharmacists, veterinarians, biologists, agriculture and pharmacognosy specialists will both conduct research and train students in the studies carried out in the Traditional and Complementary Medicine Application and Research Center and the Traditional Medicine Department. This will be the first master's and doctorate program in this field in Turkey. In addition, the Department of Traditional Medicine at our university is the first department in our country that employs permanent faculty members in this field.” gave the information.
