A joint study by an AYBU faculty member was deemed worthy of the prestigious 2025 Doğsan Science Award in the field of plastic surgery

A multidisciplinary study conducted with the significant contributions of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gülsüm Akdeniz, a faculty member in the Department of Biophysics at Yıldırım Beyazıt University in Ankara, achieved great success in the Expert Research Competition organized by the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery (TPRECD). The study won First Prize in the Clinical Category of the 2025 Doğsan Science Award.

Subject and Importance of the Award-Winning Study: This valuable study, titled "Foot-to-Hand Finger Transfer: EEG-Based Assessment of Neuroplasticity and Functional Outcomes," which won first prize, evaluates the functional outcomes of complex finger transfer operations performed in plastic surgery and, in particular, the adaptive changes that occur in the brain after surgery.

The Strength of Interdisciplinary Collaboration: One of the most striking aspects of the study is its strong multidisciplinary structure, combining surgical and basic science approaches. Along with the Plastic Surgery team, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gülsüm Akdeniz's expertise in EEG (Electroencephalography)-based brain mapping techniques is particularly noteworthy. The study's ability to measure the long-term neurofunctional success of challenging reconstructive procedures such as "Foot-to-Hand Finger Transfer" using a non-invasive method like EEG is considered a valuable contribution to scientific advancement in the field.

We congratulate our university's esteemed faculty member, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gülsüm Akdeniz, and the entire research team: Burak Yaşar, Nur Efşan Akıncı, Hasan Murat Ergani, Arslan Güvendik, Harun Güleç, and Tibet Kaan Yolsal. We wish them continued success in their outstanding contributions to science and the medical world.
