A Beneficial Invention from AYBU Academics: "Autonomous Tumor Prosthesis" for Bone Cancer Treatment
Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University (AYBU) has once again proven its pioneering role in scientific and technological fields. Dr. Sıtkı Kocaoğlu, a faculty member in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at AYBU Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, and Prof. Dr. Erhan Akdoğan, a faculty member at Yıldız Technical University, won the best academic patent award in the ISIF 2025 patent competition organized by the Turkish Patent Institute at Teknofest 2025.
This groundbreaking study offers hope for patients experiencing limb loss due to bone cancer. The autonomous tumor prosthesis, developed with a wirelessly rechargeable internal battery and machine learning capabilities, has the ability to adapt to the patient's growth process and extend itself. This feature eliminates the problems associated with current prosthetics, such as constant surgery and physical trauma, making life easier for patients.
This meaningful award, presented at the ISIF 2025 International Invention Fair by Fatih Kacır, Minister of Industry and Technology, and Prof. Dr. M. Zeki Durak, President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, served as a testament to our university's contributions to academia. The invention has been protected in Turkey, as well as in Europe, Japan, and China, and has also been registered internationally.
We congratulate all our academics who have undertaken such scientific studies for the benefit of humanity and successfully represented our university in the international arena. We hope this valuable invention will make a positive difference in the lives of patients.
